Local pilot views Vimy from the air
Pilot Brent Handy feels incredibly honoured to be a part of the Vimy Ridge commemmoration ceremonies this week in France.
Originally from Wyevale, the military pilot and former Snow Bird Captain is now also an unrestricted aerobatic pilot, and performs at airshows across Canada & USA. (Check out his website Brent Handy Aerobatics here)
Later this week Brent will fly a WWI-era replica Neiuport XI with three others during the 100th anniversary commemoration of the Battle of Vimy Ridge. The battle is recognized as the first time Canadians fought as a nation, helping to free France from German occupation. Nearly 4-thousand Canadian soldiers lost their lives in the process, with thousands more injured.
In the video below, Brent is over Notre-Dame de Lorette, a French military cemetery – the largest military cemetery in France, where some 43,000 soldiers rest after falling in the Battle of Artois.
